A fine lesson in the art of receiving, MAISON RIKA, a petite guesthouse located in the hip ‘9 streets’ district of Amsterdam. A home away from home for anyone who appreciates a warm, intimate reception and gorgeous design. The reception area is also a gallery for up-and-coming local artists and lifestyle store. Guests are welcomed on the ground floor of this traditional, three-story townhouse, formerly a gallery. The second and third floors each boast a beautifully furnished bedroom with heart-stirring views over the historic Herengracht canal.
The personal touch extends to the service, with the Rika staff happy to book restaurant reservations and share insider tips for enjoying the city. “Our aim is for our guests to enjoy the genuine, off-the-beaten-track Amsterdam,” says Ulrika.
For Ulrika, a former fashion and interiors stylist, it was a natural extension as a place for curating finds sourced on her travels. The Maison houses works by her favourite artists and designers, including custom furniture by Paul Lelieveld and artwork by San Ming. Sprinkled throughout the Maison are curiosities sniffed out in her favourite markets; unique creations like John Derian glass art; random design goodies such as scrapbooks and cards by Rifle Paper — a homey gallery that nourishes the creative spirit.
With a decor based around Ulrika’s signature black and cream palette (think old oak floors painted black and black-tiled bathrooms with matching handmade black copper wash basins), the mood is classically elegant yet modern with a vintage touch.
