This type of vessel is known as a "Limmu"—a name of Greek origin—though it goes by other names that vary from town to town. They were used for washing olives, vegetables, and similar tasks. The "splatter" pattern was created according to the artisan's own creative flair. While they date back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, production continued until the 1950s using the same traditional techniques: local clay and wood-fired kilns. After the 1950s, however, everything gradually changed with the introduction of electric or gas kilns and the use of non-local clay.
